The New Absolutes
![]()
The relativist view of
reality is expressed in statements like:
1. If it feels right, do it.
2. What's true for me, may not be
true for you.
3. One persons art is another persons pornography.
4. There are no objective morals, just differing opinions.
5. Anything goes.¹
Relativity demands that men demonstrate tolerance toward one another and one
another's views. The tolerance of the relativists leans toward political correct
speech where only those viewpoints deemed correct by them should be tolerated and
encourage. This is opposed to the true essence of tolerance which states different
perspectives should be heard and tolerated, but only the true and right ones
should prevail. The tolerance of the relativists denies freedom of speech and
promotes only speech that conforms to their ideas of political correctness. In essence
they are intolerant of any form of speech or any idea that contradicts their point of view. When the relativists can not control speech
outside their politically correct point of view, they turn to using words like
racism, homophobic, bigot in an attempt to intimidate people.
The truth about relativism is that it is just another form of absolutism.
They claim that the only thing true is that nothing is absolutely true.
That's a contradiction that leads to moral anarchy and
then societal anarchy which in turn will lead to a dictatorship. When truth is no longer
viewed as absolute, morality is gone and self rules. The purpose for
behind relativism is the justification of our behavior, good or bad, and to disarm our critics.
The one absolute that every relativist denies is a God who created this
world. Why? To deny God is to reject accountability and all forms of moral absolutes. The fact of a personal God in essence rains
on their parade. It creates both a moral and ethical dilemma for the abortionist,
homosexual, the proponent of euthanasia, etc. To be confronted with a God who
created the universe makes man accountable and that's the last thing a
relativist wants is to be accountable to anyone, especially to a holy, righteous
God.
Every relativist becomes an absolutist when confronting the truth of Biblical
Christianity.
He will deny its truth claims by claiming all religions are right and for the
relativist, that is an absolute. This brings us to the second truth of
relativism. Each individual relativist believes he is the only person who is right
and reject the possibility
of anybody else being right. It's not possible for all
religions to be true because the basic teachings of every religion are contradictory.
Jesus left no room for relativism when He said, "I am the way, the truth, the
life; no many cometh unto the Father but by me."² Either He is absolutely right
or wrong. If he is right to follow any other religious path will lead
to eternal damnation. If you follow Jesus and He is wrong, you have lost nothing
because the relativist says all religions lead to God. Only in the
relativist mind is being wrong really being right. Did I confuse you? I hope
not, the only sure way to God is through Jesus Christ, the way, the truth and
the life.
The Bible speaks about man's moral condition: "For all have sinned and fall
short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23)
The Bible speaks of man's eternal destiny: "For the wages of sin is death, but
the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 3:23)
The Bible speaks to man's cure: ""For God so loved the world that He gave His only
begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have
everlasting life." (John 3:16)
The proper response to God: "And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not
so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be
merciful to me a sinner!'" (Luke 18:13)
