Relationships

"These things I command you, that ye
love one another." [John 15:17]
Jesus summed up the total of all human relationships with these
words. We are to love one another - wife, husband, children, friends, people we
meet and yes, even our enemies. What does it mean to love one another? I would
suggest that there are ten characteristics when they are present in our human
relationships that give evidence of loving relationships. These characteristics
are tenderheartedness [expressed by sympathy and empathy shown by sharing with
others their sorrows and joy], kindness, humbleness [absence of
self-assertiveness or pride], quietness, patience, gentleness [absence of
violence and temper], spirit of forgiveness, harmony, thankfulness and absence
of respect of persons.
Rather than telling you how these characteristics impact all our
human relationships I suggest you take your Bibles and look verses on each of
these subjects. As you read them, let the Holy Spirit and the Word of God
challenge you as to how you can improve your relationships. As you improve your
ability to create better relationships, you will experience a stronger marriage,
closer ties with your children and a better social environment.
Now a word of warning regarding all your human relationships. Not
everybody will immediately respond to the new you. It takes time.
One more word of warning regarding your human relationships.
All these characteristics must first be evidenced in you relationship
with God. If not, they will not be seen as genuine by the people around you.
Examine your relationship with God and see what must be improved. I'll give you
an example to consider. In your communication with God do you express the
genuine humbleness of the publican or do you speak with the pride of the
Pharisee? [Luke 18:10-14] The improvement of our relationship with God and those
around us will take work and there will be times of regression but be
discouraged.
